Marlborough (region)

Is the wine region on the northernmost tip of the South Island. The Sauvignon Blanc is characterized by pronounced spicy wines, fresh acids and tropical fruit aromas.  

In 1973, the first cautious start was made with wine growing in the South Island, before that time the focus was on the North Island. The cultivated area soon doubled in 30 years and the Sauvignon Blanc became indisputably linked to New Zealand. Due to the exceptionally fast growth, Marlborough has become the largest wine region and wine centre in the country.

Climate

Constant wind currents from the sea have a cooling effect on the vineyards, little rainfall with warm summers ensure even ripening and few fungal diseases. Grape varieties such as Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc feel extremely comfortable and pure wines are often made without great effort.

The unique climate and soils give the Sauvignon Blanc an unprecedented, lively character that jumps out of your glass like goods! The Pinot Noir often provides juicy fruit with beautiful freshness and lots of length.

Marlborough Sounds

The Marlborough Sounds refers to an extensive network of submerged valleys on the northern side of the South Island, which were once formed by a combination of subsidence and now rising sea levels.

Terroir

Marlborough has a well-drained soil structure. We find material that is fine-grained and carried by rivers, but also a gravel layer in which the roots of the vines go deep into the ground in search of minerals.
