Wine country Austria has an old and rich wine history and presents itself as a wine country with a special (Austrian) character . The country is very versatile as a wine country, both in the field of sparkling wines, dry white wines, rosé wines, full red wines, but also renowned for its wines with residual sweetness; this country has a wealth of riches to offer for the true wine lover. In leading international tastings, Austria is regularly among the best with its wines. Wine growing in Austria is very traditional. The harvest is almost exclusively done manually and many producers work (largely) organically.
In Austria, 35 grape varieties , 22 white and 13 red, are officially recognized for the production of quality wine. Especially the large variation of characteristic local grape varieties produces wines with a special character. Of course, we are well-known for the versatile Grüner Veltliner; the most important white grape from Austria. But no less good are the local Welschriesling, Riesling, Weissburgunder (= Pinot Blanc), and Muskat-Ottonel, which you may be less familiar with. The most important red wines are made from Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch, St. Laurent and Blauer Portugieser, among others.
